This week, Women and Leadership Australia announced the 8 amazing women who won the 2018 awards for Excellence in Women’s Leadership. These awards primarily seek to increase the visibility of women in leadership in Australia, by recognising professional women who strive to increase opportunities for leadership equality in their chosen fields.

Research shows that strong female role models play a vital role in increasing gender diversity in the workplace, particularly at the leadership level - so let’s learn a bit more about these incredible women!

National Winner

Professor Gillian Triggs

Who is amazing because...
She is an Australian leader in human rights and justice initiatives and uses her expertise as a lawyer to champion for change by ensuring access to justice for everyone including those experiencing domestic violence, homelessness and financial difficulties.

Victorian Winner

Magda Szubanski

Who is amazing because...
She is a fantastic Australian actress, a strong advocate for marriage equality and a successful author whose autobiography has won numerous literacy awards and accolades.

Queensland Winner

Dr Kirstin Ferguson

Who is amazing because...
She is a company director who sits on multiple advisory boards and also advocates for women in leadership through the development of initiatives that specifically focus on the amazing work of women around the world. In 2017, through her #celebratingwomen movement Kirsten celebrated two women every day for a year through a powerful social media campaign.

Western Australian Winner

Dr Kate Stannage

Who is amazing because...
She is a leader in orthopaedic medicine; who, as the first female president in her field, is working with government representatives to target sexual harassment in the medical workplace.

Through her Body Image Movement and associated public speaking, documentary films and published works, is internationally recognised as having created a fundamental shift in the way people think about themselves and their bodies.

Who is amazing because...
Is a strong advocate for advancing the careers of women in technology and has herself pioneered incredible technological advances including the development of a robotic arm which allows children with cancer in hospital to attend school.

Who is amazing because...
She has had a long and decorated military career leading Australian forces overseas since 1983 and has also worked with the United Nations. As a keen sports fan she is heavily involved in supporting the progression of women in the AFL.

Northern Territory Winner

Nova Peris OAM

Who is amazing because...
She was the first Aboriginal women elected to parliament and has also won an Olympic Gold Medal! She is passionate about Aboriginal rights and campaigns for changing attitudes throughout the Australian community. Nova’s advocacy and passion for making a difference in Australia also extends to mental health, youth suicide and prevention of domestic violence.
